Doha Institute to Host International Conference

The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) was set up in Qatar in 2015 as an independent university in Doha. It offers Master’s and PhD programs in two areas: Social Sciences and Humanities, and Economics, Administration, and Public Policy. The DI focuses on students’ needs, encourages learning across different subjects, and teaches mainly in Arabic, but students must also know English well.

The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) will hold an international conference on “Forensic Linguistics: Theories and Applications” on April 28–29, 2025. Organized by the Linguistics and Arabic Lexicography Program at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, the event invites researchers to submit their papers, with abstract submissions due by December 15, 2024.

The conference will focus on forensic linguistics. This field uses language analysis to solve legal and criminal cases. It will explore the history, importance, and practical uses of forensic linguistics. The aim is to promote research and encourage its application in areas like law, courts, and communication.

Dr. Mehdi Arar, head of the Linguistics Program, said the event will bring together academic researchers and legal experts. They will share knowledge and experiences. Topics will include legal language, new developments in forensic linguistics, solving crimes using language, and analyzing verbal and non-verbal communication.

Forensic linguistics studies many aspects of language. It helps identify authors of abusive content online and detect plagiarism. It also analyzes police records, witness statements, and legal documents. The field looks at dialects, speech patterns, and profiling suspects based on their language.

The program offers Master’s and Doctoral degrees. It trains researchers to meet global standards. The goal is to solve challenges in Arabic linguistics and lexicography.

Final paper submissions for the conference are due by April 1, 2025.
