Starting the Journey (Umrah from Qatar)
Planning to drive from Qatar to Makkah for Umrah from Qatar? It’s about 3,000 kilometres for a round trip, and many people prefer this journey over flying. The road trip offers scenic views and the flexibility to travel at your own pace. However, it would be best if you prepared well to ensure a smooth and safe journey.
Getting Ready for the Trip
First, make sure you have:
- A valid Saudi tourist visa (apply online at the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
- Vehicle registration and insurance.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Proof of your hotel bookings in Makkah.
- Emergency contact details.
Avoid travelling during the summer due to extreme heat, and aim for quieter times to avoid long queues at the border.
Preparing Your Car
Your car is your lifeline on this long trip.
- Get a complete vehicle check-up, especially for tyres, the cooling system, and the battery.
- Keep a spare key and tools for emergencies.
- Check the radiator and ensure it’s working well.
Best Time to Start
Start your journey early, around 3:30 a.m., to avoid heat and traffic. Refuel in Doha and again at the last Woqod station before the Abu Samra border.
Crossing the Border
At the Qatar-Saudi border:
- Qatar’s Abu Samra checkpoint has a drive-through system for quick processing.
- At Saudi’s Salwa checkpoint, you’ll need to complete biometric verification.
- Get car insurance, which costs around 120–200 riyals depending on the duration.
Driving Through Saudi Arabia
The first major stop is Hafouf. Many travellers continue to Riyadh for a rest and prayer break.
- Plan to reach Taif before nightfall, as the roads can be difficult to navigate after dark.
- Taif offers affordable hotels (around 130 riyals per night) where you can rest before the final stretch to Makkah.
Entering Makkah
Before entering Makkah, stop at the miqat points (Qarn Al Manazil or Sail Al Kabeer) to wear Ihram and make your intention for Umrah. The roads to Makkah can be winding, so drive carefully.
In Makkah
Once in Makkah:
- Use the Kudai parking area for free, secure parking.
- Take a 15-riyal taxi to reach Masjid Al-Haram.
- Find accommodation behind the Clock Tower on Ibrahim Khalil Road, with prices ranging from 130 to 250 riyals (bargaining is encouraged).
